Our clients were downsizing to a generously sized mid-town
condo, with quality appointments and upgrades. It was a dream
move-in ready suite for them. They loved the existing contemporary
decor and warm finishes -- cherry-stained maple floors, kitchen,
and cabinetry against pale caramel walls -- and were happy to
keep as many of the existing window coverings and light fixtures
as possible. All they wanted to do was get rid of their old furniture
and decorate. So we went with the flow, and let the suite dictate
our design direction.
An existing fireplace/media
centre was the focal point of the living area. To balance its
strength, we selected a deep grey-brown wood-framed sofa for
the opposite wall. Deep rust-toned fabrics on chairs and pillows
highlight the main seating area and echo the warm wood tones
that predominate. A strategically placed chair and ottoman allows
one to be comfortably ensconced in front of the fireplace, drink
near at hand. An out-of-the-way corner is now a luxe reading
nook -- furnished with a leather swivel chair, dramatic oversized
ebony floor lamp, and convenient wine table.
For the dining area, back-dropped by a wall of windows, we
selected furniture that allowed the view to play the starring
role. A sleek Italian glass and chrome extendable table makes
the most of the space, opening to seat 12 for festive occasions.
Its visible expansion mechanism is integral to the almost invisible
beauty of the piece. Comfortable dining chairs are upholstered
in soft neutrals which play second fiddle to the foliage beyond.
Throughout the foyer and
main area, furnishings with glass and chrome reflect the light
and coolly contrast with the dominant warm notes. Colourful artwork
and decorative items add variety while pulling the space together.
The highlight is an array of hand-blown art glass above the sofa,
featuring bright tones of orange, teal and yellow.
The bedroom was our major undertaking in the suite, where
we designed custom furnishings to evoke a chic boutique hotel.
A pair of elegant tall cabinets -- cream lacquer fronts framed
by warm maple -- flanks an upholstered headboard wall. Floating
shelves and articulated sconces are close at hand for bedtime
reading. Black-out raw silk draperies create a cocoon-like atmosphere
and reinforce the feeling of hotel living.
Indeed the entire condo is imbued with a sense of quiet luxury,
from the moment one opens the door. Truly a dream come true for
these proud homeowners!
