(Continued . . .)
For the rest of the main floor we turned to a colour scheme of
creams and greens. The living room -- now that the dining area
has been shifted to the back of the
house -- is large enough to accommodate 2 seating areas. Sofas
in both groupings are simple and tailored and covered in velvety
cream fabrics that melt into walls painted a slightly darker
shade. The more formal seating area near the foyer is completed
by a pair of high-backed armless chairs, covered in a graphic
chartreuse fabric. Accompanying the more casual sectional nearer
the kitchen is a pair of stools, upholstered in damask in another
shade of yellow-green. Drapery is comprised of silk panels in
a juxtaposition of cream and yet another green. Under each seating
area is a finely knotted Persian rug. After searching through
stacks of carpets, these were serendipitous finds -- their complementary
patterns improbably an almost exact match for the chartreuse
of the armchairs. The adjoining columned foyer also features
chartreuse on walls and ceiling.
Many of the furnishings in this space were selected for their
gleam and glitter. Tables are finished in high gloss lacquer
and silver-leaf. An Art Deco style console table, topped by a
starburst mirror and pair of capiz shell and silver lamps, creates
a glamorous focal point that bridges the two seating areas. Above
the coffee table in each grouping hangs a chandelier with a crystal-embellished
drum shade. The powder room was treated to luxe finishes as well,
with crystal wall sconces and hand-made wallpaper with metallic
details.
The client's personality is evident through the display of
favourite pieces from the couple's collection of original Canadian
art. A refinished heirloom curio, inherited from her grandmother,
houses a variety of decorative accessories that she has collected.
Sofa pillows change seasonally, with bright pink and spring greens
and yellows giving way to the colours of fall.
The main floor of this elegant townhouse easily accommodates
events from dinner parties for 6 to cocktail parties for 60,
allowing the guests to sparkle and the hosts to shine.
